Sabah, Sarawak now special within the Federation: legal expert. “Good first step on rights” | Daily Express Online

Kota Kinabalu: The recent amendment to the Federal Constitution reverts to the constitutional position of 1963 when the territories of the Federation were described in three distinct categories: (a) the States of Malaysia; (b) the Borneo States of Sabah and Sarawak, and (c) Singapore.

“Although this amendment does not confer any additional rights or powers, it is significant because it recognizes that Sabah and Sarawak are special and have a different, autonomous and ‘symmetrical’ position in the federal organization of Malaysia,” said the Professor Emeritus Datuk. Dr. Shad Saleem Faruqi. The constitutional amendment is significant as it amounts to the incorporation of the 1963 Malaysia Agreement into our Constitution,” Prof Shad Saleem said.
