New Sanctions Target Russian Federation Council, Defense Organizations
A new round of government sanctions against Russian politicians and defense entities targets 170 members of Russia’s upper house of parliament, known as the Federation Council, as well as six defense companies and organizations .

In a statement released today, Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta said the latest sanctions demonstrate “the government’s intention to prosecute those responsible for the Russian invasion of Ukraine”.
“As President Putin’s war machine continues its unlawful attacks and new revelations of atrocities come to light, we are determined to impose costs on those involved.
“We stand with the people of Ukraine and are committed to holding President Putin and his team of warmongers to account.”
All those targeted contributed to the attack on Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, Mahuta said.
The “full suite” of bans had been extended to more than 400 people caught by previously implemented travel bans.
“This will further prohibit those we have already sanctioned from conducting business in New Zealand and prevent New Zealand from becoming a financial haven for those involved in Russia’s illegal activities in Ukraine.”
