Flags fly proudly at the Council of the Federation
As a mark of respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents and visitors, the Federation Council will fly the national Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags in front of Bangerang Park during National Reconciliation Week 2022.
Federation Council Mayor Cr Pat Bourke said the action represents the Council’s commitment to reconciliation and fits well with this year’s National Reconciliation Week theme, “Be Courageous”. Make the change’.
“The Council has an important role to play in reconciliation, and by playing our part, we collectively build relationships and communities that value the peoples, histories, cultures and futures of Aboriginal and Strait Islander people. Torres.”
Mayor Bourke said Council recently established a RAP Task Force comprised of Indigenous and community stakeholders, as well as Council representatives who will develop a reconciliation action plan for the Council of the Federation.
“We see this action as another important step in supporting the work of reconciliation that the Council is developing,” he said.
Every year, National Reconciliation Week is celebrated from May 27 to June 3. It is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to reconciliation in Australia. The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2022, “Be Courageous. Make the change. is a challenge for all Australians – individuals, families, communities, organizations and government – to be brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so that we can bring about change for the benefit of all Australians.
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags are powerful symbols of unity and strength for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Flying Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags is one of the most widespread and fundamental ways for councils to recognize and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
