Federation Council commented on Orban’s remarks on EU rule of law
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s statement on the inadmissibility of the supremacy of European Union (EU) laws over the national laws of member states reflects the mindset of the Hungarian people. This comment was made by Federation Council Senator Alexei Pushkov on his Telegram channel.
“I think it’s political rhetoric so far, but it’s also indicative. Until recently, the leaders of EU member states did not allow themselves such doubts. And these are not not just words, but a reflection of public sentiment in Hungary,” the Perm Territory senator wrote.
Earlier, NTV quoted Viktor Orban as saying during a meeting of his supporters in Budapest. The Hungarian prime minister said the European Union was waging a “jihad, a holy war”, elevating its legislation above the national law of participating countries. According to Orban, if the EU pursues this policy, Hungary will not be able to follow the same path with it. At the same time, NTV cited poll data, according to which 80% of Hungarians support the country’s membership of the European Union.
On February 12, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban described the policy of sanctions against Russia as a strategic error of the European Union. According to him, the sanctions against Moscow are a dead end. The politician stressed that Budapest is not capable of changing the direction of EU foreign policy, and in this regard he developed and uses the Hungarian model.
